I first started using florescents for starting heirloom tomato plants from seed to sell to customers who wanted plants they couldn't find in any big box stores and the t-5 was great for this purpose. Then LED grow lights came on the scene and I was very excited to have a light specifically tailored to plant growth, bit was I wrong.This blurple light killed of my tiny Tim hydroponic tomatoes anything else placed under the light didn't survive so fed up I was done with LED grow lights and went back to the tried and true florescents t-5 high output. Then this light comes on the scene and from the reviews and testimonials I knew LED lights had finally matured into plant growing machines. The first I have to say about this light is that it's bright very bright and the light spread is excellent. Second is the build quality, I'm not into things that is built like nobody cares about doing their best to make a quality product but this light is different. Although they are more expensive initially, HPS bulbs last up to twice as long as MH, up to five years. But, like MH lights they do lose effectiveness with use and may need to be replaced as often as every two years based on how much use they get.
The reflector hood is a reflective casing around the bulb. It increases the effectiveness and efficiency of the bulb by reflecting the light down onto the plants at multiple angles, giving a more effective spread. This also allows you to use lights that give off less heat, saving on electricity and cooling costs. The ballast is the power box that powers the light.Remote ballasts are much better for home systems. This is the most expensive element of the lighting system, so it must be kept off the ground to ensure that it never gets wet in case of a flood or leak. Flooding is risky with systems such as Ebb & Flow in case your drainage tube gets clogged.
Timers are the most inexpensive piece of the lighting system, but they are incredibly important. They must be heavy-duty and grounded (3 prong plug) but can be either manual or electric.
